The Poultry Research and Training Centre (PRTC) has been established on 11 March 2008 with the financial support from Agricultural Sector Programme Support (ASPS) II of Danida at the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) campus, within the legal framework of the university Act 2006 (Act XXX of 2006). PRTC is an autonomous institution, in accordance with the provision of the university Act July 16, Sunday, 2006.
Its aim and objective is to become a leading centre in Bangladesh for capacity building in the livestock sector through.
Short term training.
Enhancing research.
Enhancing communication and collaboration between private and public stakeholders.
PRTC is responsible to a Board of Governors regarding policies, strategic planning, annual work plans and budgeting. The board is constituted of 15 members with members from CVASU, research institutions, extension agencies, poultry industries and NGOs. Vice-Chancellor, CVASU is the chairman and Director, PRTC is the member-secretary of the board.
PRTC Vision
Providing better animal health services for poultry and livestock to the ultimate target group, the poor farmers.
Facilitate enhanced communication and collaboration between private and public stakeholders in the poultry and livestock sector.
Help providing better national prevention and control services for combating Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and other contagious poultry diseases.
Provide better management and production services in the poultry and livestock sector
PRTC Mission
To make relevant cost-effective short-term training packages available for all stakeholders in the poultry and livestock development sector.
To assure that all training is based on the newest available knowledge and research results.
To reinforce institutional links between research, higher education, the public and private sectors .
PRTC training courses
Training courses will be offered on
Poultry health management.
Poultry disease diagnosis.
Poultry nutrition.
Poultry production and management.
Poultry hatchery management.
Disease prevention strategies in semi-scavenging, semi-commercial and industrial production units.
Marketing and sales, and other specific subjects identified by the user groups.
The courses will be tailor made practical oriented designed according to the needs and experience of participants.
The courses will be based on learning by doing set-up in the PRTC training rooms and CVASU laboratories combined with
1. Visits to farms
2. Veterinary clinics
3. Feed mills
4. Field disease investigation laboratories under DLS
PRTC has a plan to offer short-term post-graduate training courses not offered by the departments of CVASU
Courses will be offered in either Bengali or English, depending on the customers language skills
PRTC training facilities
Accommodation for the trainees:
A dormitory with accommodation for 22 trainees and 2 external resource persons.
The dormitory is fully catered with a dining room, common room and visitors room.
Training facilities:
A well equipped computer laboratory with 20 computers and internet facilities.
Two training halls for 30 students each with audio-visual facilities
A well equipped post mortem room.
Well trained CVASU faculty members and DLS experts are the trainers
Other facilities in the PRTC include:

A conference room for Board meeting

PRTC Target group
The primary target groups are private and public sector and NGO staffs involved in animal production and disease control in Bangladesh.
The secondary target groups are CVASU and PRTC staffs to be involved in organizing, implementing and evaluating research-based training programmes at PRTC
The ultimate beneficiaries are thousands of poor poultry and livestock keepers in Bangladesh benefiting from improved animal husbandry service provisions.
PRTC is getting ready for Target group training
A Poultry Group from among the CVASU faculty members has been formed to conduct the “Target group” training programs effectively and efficiently.
Action for “Target group training” is under process. Different NGOs like, CARE, Bangladesh (Chittagong region); Char Livelihood Project (CLP); Action Aid; RFLDC and different poultry entrepreneurs have been approached for sending trainees.
The one week long training programme for two batches of 44 Para-vets working with CARE Bangladesh, Chittagong region has recently been completed (7-13 April and 22-28 April, 2009).
Action is being taken to select local and foreign consultants to develop need based training curriculum for PRTC.
To make the trainers ready the Faculty members of CVASU and DLS Staffs are being trained:
a) 3 day long training course (26-28 October 2008) on “Adult Teaching” has been completed.
A total of 22 participants from CVASU (19) and DLS (3) have attended the training programme.
Anita Monty and Leon Brimer from the Faculty of life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark were the consultants.
The course on “Adult Teaching” included such subjects as:
Planning a course
Motivation for learning
Resistance / Opposition to learning
An optimal learning environment
E-learning / blended learning
Evaluation of teaching, etc.
b) The second training course was on “Bioinformatics” of 5 days duration (17-21 December 2008). A total of 21 participants from CVASU and DLS have attended the Course
Henrick Christensen from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark was the consultant of the course.
The course included such subjects as:
Sequencing, search functions and sequence exchange
BLAST search
DNA, Protein databases
PCR and PCR Primer designing
Phylogeny
Sequence based typing, Classification, Identification of microorganisms, etc.
High level training in Denmark and in India has been planned to be held during May-June 2009.
International Conference to discuss the issues related to food security and food safety has been completed during 17-19 March, 2009.
